As the wind howls and the snow blows– we may be two days from the spring equinox but the weather is firmly winter– the new and very bonny marmalade from les collines is springing forth!!…
les collines rive droite!
So happy to announce, Fleisher’s Pasture-Raised Meats in Uptown Kingston now stocks les collines! Our little jars have crossed the mighty Hudson!!

of frosted pipes, frigid winds and luge runs
There have been a few nights when the wind’s been so emphatic I thought the roof was about to peel off, or maybe parts of the chimney. The latter stands between the two west-northwest facing windows in my bedroom, and the tremendous banging and clangings that emanate are a mystery. …
Scots marmalade, in a series
Of marmalade and men. No more mice….
candle in the window
Normally the light-sensitive electric candles come out of the windows by Mardi Gras, a sort of arbitrary cutoff I developed years ago when I found myself unable to remove them sooner.
Of course most people would get them out after the holidays. But I so love the way they come on as the light fades, from faint flickering to candle glow, and they remind me of the magic of Colonial Williamsburg first experienced as a very young child. The 18th century, c’est moi.
The cold and the snow are so deep this year, the candles remain, a week past Ash Wednesday. Another week, the days will be that much longer, maybe above freezing, and it will finally feel like time. But I am grateful for the extra light this winter.
to sleep, perchance to dream
Toward the end of January my post-flu need for a lot more sleep merged with the onset of extreme cold to become a semi-hibernatory pattern. No more hauling up in the dark hours before dawn; it was just too damn cold and my body could not deal….
Ash Wednesday

The last time I received ashes for the beginning of Lent was by accident. Though as Freud would say, there are no accidents. It is the moment, I realize now, when I began to really think about grace….
in development: marmalade
I resisted but now I am coming around to the idea of making a marmalade. Part of the resistance was that I have not a speck of experience, first-hand or other, with making it, the way I do with preserves and jelly, and historically have not been a fan of eating it.
But in the middle of winter, thoughts do turn to citrus. …
snow, snow, cold; repeat
Snow was general over the Northeast again this past weekend. I realized that this was in fact a nor’easter of sorts when I saw the snow gently piling up in the mudroom inside the bottom corner crack of the east-facing side door that needs a) to be replaced entirely or b) at the very least have some weather strip freshening….
trappin’ critters
Traps were set. The great George Gardner gave me a bucket of snap traps and told me how to do it. …
